On the fast, easy-to-use new digital direct-to-press case printing system being introduced
by KIWI Coders Corporation, printing masks are laid out in minutes using Windows 95ª
software and TrueTypeª fonts. Bar codes and graphics are scanned and positioned using
on-screen templates. Paper proofs are made to check final positioning and to proof read
copy. Following approval, a digitized membrane is completed, the computerized design is
saved to the PCs hard drive, and printing begins.
Printing is equally easy. The digitized membrane is laid on the printing cylinder by
clamping one end and rotating the cylinder, which automatically positions it for printing.
Film produces about 2,000 clear, sharp impressions, making the new system ideal for
printing top-quality, short to medium runs without the expense and time-consuming effort
of producing printing plates or setting type.
The new system, named Odyssey for its classic combination of strength and
flexibility, combines the convenience and cost-effectiveness of computer-generated
printing and graphics with the well-known rugged construction and quality performance of
KIWI printing equipment. It provides cost-effective flat case printing with excellent
print quality, and to a larger area than labeling can handle. The live print
area for the Odyssey is 11 inches by 32 inches. The press handles flat cases up to 26 by
44 inches (a special width model is available as an option), and minimum case size is 13
by 13 inches. It will handle cartons with wall thicknesses up to a maximum of 400-pound
test, and as thin as B flute (0.110 inches thick). Discharge height is 37 inches.
The system consists of a thermal imager, controlled by the PC utilizing Windows 95
software, and a printing system which is a variation of the companys well-known
Model 2481 Flat Case Printerthe workhorse of the long-run flat case printers. The
thrust of this next generation system is to provide quick changeover of printed copy,
reducing the need to inventory preprinted cases yet delivering print quality equal to
long-run traditional printing methods.
The new printing system features a 2.5-gallon ink supply and are available in red,
green and blue as well as black. Odyssey options include dual top and bottom printing
cylinders, a totalizing counter, stacker conveyor, return conveyor and a conveyor catcher,
in addition to the special width model press.
